How To Schmooze
There's some great bits of useful information cropping up on the 'Net for indie gamers this week... and it's only Tuesday!
This one is from Joseph Lieberman - the videogame marketing guy, not the anti-videogame senator.
Tips on How To Schmooze at Conventions
Don't roll your eyes! Stop that! One of the things I have grudginly learned to appreciate as an indie game developer over the last couple of years is just how useful these marketing skills really are. Even if you aren't actively marketing your game or yourself right at the moment - this is how you develop contacts!
I don't drink, so I don't know how well the tips concerning to alcohol really apply to me, or how much that restricts me from schmoozing opportunities. I think I can vouch secondhand for the obvious, "Know your limit" tip. I heard a story from a journalist who shall remain nameless here who said he got a little too drunk one night and confused Richard Garriott for Peter Molyneux. Repeatedly. In spite of numerous attempts at correction by said gaming luminary. He said the next morning, when he was actually interviewing Garriott, Garriott was gracious enough to pretend he'd forgotten the whole thing. But the journalist was pretty embarassed about it, even years later.

You don't have to drink alcohol to take full advantage of his advice. Buying someone else a drink doesn't mean you have to drink alcohol--though you should probably be companionable enough to buy yourself something. Any bar I've been in didn't have any trouble coming up with non-alcoholic stuff for me. I was designated driver often enough (um, always--why waste a non-drinker?) in my younger days to know this.
