Indie Games for the Wii? Oui!
I guess it's official:

"Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service.

"We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop."

Details are, of course, sketchy at this time. But it seems Microsoft's LiveArcade has changed the face of console gaming for the forseeable future.

Check out the small (but full) article here:
Nintendo to Offer Original Game Downloads For the Wii.

I've been hoping for this for some time! It seems that it's these emerging markets that hold the most promise for indies. I always think wistfully back to the days when we created PDA software, when those devices were really becoming popular.

Developing for the Palm was like printing money. Developing for Windows is like pulling teeth. (But then again, maybe I just need to be more inventive about it?)

Unfortunately, developing for a major console isn't as open as other platforms, so it's not something a purely garage operation with a small budget is going to be able to pull off.

But it's still an awesome opportunity for the more established indies that have a track record behind them.

I'll be very interested to see how this dev kit stacks up (in terms of price, usability etc) against Microsoft's XNA Framework.

It's nice to see these doors opening. Now if I can just finish something so I can get my foot in one of those doors; any one of them would be nice. ;)
