Diablo: The Movie - Coming Soon To A Theater Near You!
Today BlizzPlanet confirmed (inasmuch as these things can be made "certain") that a Diablo movie is in the works.

Once upon a time, this idea would have delighted me. After all, the world of Diablo is a rich in background and a combination of fantasy and gothic horror flavor. There is so much that could be done here, the concept boggles the mind with geeky feelings of goodness.

But Hollywood's reputation for movie adaptations of videogames isn't exactly stellar. Meaning they actually make their opposites - videogame adaptations of movie licenses - actually look GOOD. And while Hollywood has proven that they can - occasionally - do horror with a deft touch, the combination of horror and videogames just doesn't inspire me with confidence.

I'm trying to think - what GOOD movies based on videogames have been made? The last one that made it to the theaters that I actually enjoyed was Mortal Kombat, and that was more than a decade ago. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was certainly pretty to look at, but it wasn't a great show. Now - direct to DVD - Final Fantasy: Advent Children was pretty awesome. But that was undoubtably because I'm a fanboy of the game... I had to struggle to keep track of the plot. I can't imagine a non-gamer watching it with any amount of comprehension, or enjoyment beyond looking at the pretty pictures. I hear some people really enjoyed Silent Hill --- I haven't seen it yet, but I'm going to put it on the ol' Netflix list and try it out. After enduring the horror that was the Wing Commander movie, how bad could it really be?

Ugh. I can't wait to see what kind of mess Hollywood makes of this. I should've stopped watching movies based on videogames after Street Fighter but somehow, I kept hope alive... that is, until I saw DOOM.

As for Silent Hill, I'm not sure how I feel about that one. I suppose it's one of the better movie adaptations but I don't know if that's much of a compliment.

Yeah, it's not saying much.

My biggest disappointment was the Wing Commander movie. I personally thought Wing Commander IV had an outstanding movie and decent storyline behind it. I thought all of it would make a decent big-screen movie... with the addition of more scenes and slightly improved special effects. So I was really hoping that the WC movie would be of around the same quality.

Eeenh. Nope, thanks for playing. They sucked all the coolness out of the WC universe.

I found the Silent Hill movie to be pretty rough to sit through. If you're interested in seeing a film that attempts to recreate the general mechanics of a video game as literally as possible, it may be up your alley though. ;)

I never did see Doom. I think it's a shame movies based on video games so far have been so lackluster. I think the movie studios and directors just need to start realizing that they have an intelligent audience and they should be making the movies accordingly.

I'm hoping they take it to the realm of parody and feature a glowing, floating arrow that compels nearby heroes to smash things and loot.

Or they borrow the ending from the first game, and have the main character - after defeating Diablo and having a pointy evil crystal in his hand, go, "Wow! I coulda had a V-8!"

(Yes, it's a very old commercial, but in the commercials the doofus would smack themselves in the forehead when saying that. I found the whole sticking-the-crystal-in-the-forehead thing to be utterly inexplicable in the first game. I mean, shoot, were you out of POCKETS due to all the loot or something?)

When are they gonna learn? With maybe the exception of Silent Hill, no decent movie has ever been made of a videogame. This simply doesn't work, period! Same goes for video games based on movies. They will probably change the background story for no good reason, cast the worst possible actors for it and make it another stupid action flick built entirely on fights, special effects and half-naked girls.

Advent Children kinda disappointed me. Sure, the story was cool, the graphics were cool, and the I already knew how cool the characters were. The disappointment started when the characters started talking. Very disappointing, I enjoyed the Japanesse version with subtitles much better because there was emotion in thier voices.

And I hate to admit this, but I actually enjoyed Tomb Raider, the second one I think. But, it is not on any top movie list of mine.

I kind of liked the Tomb Raider movies. They weren't "Fantastic" by any stretch, but it was mildly entertaining. It did get "Over the Top" in quite a few places however.

Also, Dead or Alive (DOA) is now in theaters. Not sure what it's like though.

I'd have to agree that generally movies from games don't work. If we see a "Zuma" or "Bejewelled" movie, then you'll know we've hit a new low.

What if it's a charming CGI story about an adventurous frog and his friends? :)

.... ack, my brain just invented Zuma, The Animated Series.

Dead or Alive is a movie?

Wasn't that the game (at least the first one) which had the big selling point of "Boob Physics" in a fighting game?

Gegi - my first thought was actually "Frogger." Shows what an old fart I am.

Good video game movies: Doom, Resident Evils, Mortal Kombat 1, Tomb Raider 1

Bad video game movies: Nothing beats Super Mario bros

So you thought Doom was a good one, huh?

I'm gonna have to check that one out one of these nights. When I'm ready for more punishment. The wound from finally watching "The Hulk" several weeks ago still stings...

I saw Silent Hill. It was alright. It wasn't great. It wasn't nearly as bad as Roger Ebert claims, though. I felt after watching it that everything was explained. I never played a Silent Hill game, so I had no previous background information about it.

I loved Super Mario Bros. I was child when I was one of the seven people in the theater watching it, though. At that age, anything Mario was cool.

As for casting bad actors, video game licenses seem to get big names. Just look at who was cast for Dungeon Siege: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460780/

Frankly, because of German laws and Uwe Boll, as well as Hollywood's ability to treat video games as a loss leader for marketing their own products, we're not likely going to see GOOD movies based on video games anytime soon.
