Frayed Knights Squeaks Into the Lead!
Frayed Knights is a contestant in the MyDreamRPG Game-In-A-Year competition, and the mid-contest tallies were reported late Friday evening. The results..?

Frayed Knights is in first place. By only 50 out of over 10,000 points. Talk about a narrow lead - less that 0.5%! The four other games in the top five positions include Pelorea, Isles of Midgard, Arcanoria, and Fantasci. Thus far, the contest has been rewarding process and communication more than the games themselves... which has caused a small amount of drama by teams that feel that their projects are superior. And they may well be correct.

Pelorea, in particular, seems to be particularly well-run. Of course, it all comes down to the game's release and how it is received. THAT is pretty key. All five of the front-runners could miss the release (to be honest, I am worried about Frayed Knights, too), which would kinda turn the whole contest on its ear.

There are several games in the middle of the pack that are looking really good, and if the contestents don't give up on them, they may do really well. I've mentioned Aegist Road before, partly because our own DrSlinky - AKA Greg Tedder - is heading up that one. B.R.A.V.E. is looking better and better.

I hope that this contest encourages a lot of indies to actually finish their games and get them to market. There's much too high of a failure rate in first-time indie game development (and second-time, too).

No love for Bit Battles? ;]

The competition thus far has been great. There's some really interesting and seemingly fun games involved. Here's hoping I get a chance to play all of them!

Sorry - I've not been following Bit Battles, but I promise to take a look as soon as I can :) I am only familiar with a few of the titles in the competition. Want to share more about it?

Also, Blogger is being a pain the last couple of days, and not publishing ... well, anything... reliably to an external site. Including comments :(

You may find this reassuring - my first reaction is that maybe I should consider buying the other games, too, like I'm planning to buy yours as long as you do in fact finish it. That is, the ranking must be correct if it gives Frayed Knights a high ranking.

I'm not much of a gamer anymore, so I'd like to point out that the games I'm currently looking forward to are Spore and Frayed Knights.

Congrats on leading the pack! Your project is really shaping up nicely!

Yeah, I noticed your Monkey Island post dissapeared today at one point. I really liked what he said about reality based graphics. I like them too, but I prefer non-reality.

Anyway, I too am enjoying the competition. It has pushed me into developing while pushing the game. There is rather uncomfortable at times, but very self motivational. It seems that the more I report, the more I get done.

Congratulations! That's completely awesome. Of course, I'm not going to let the competition determine if I buy the game or not. You've already made one sell by virtue of the hilarious "interviews" with the characters.

You guys are very kind, thank you :)

@David - Well, if it came down to Spore OR Frayed Knights, I'm afraid I'd have to concede to Wil Wright... ;) But thank you!

Though I'm curious about you not being "much of a gamer anymore." I mean, yeah, I kinda feel the same way... I used to buy a game or two a month, and that's not been happening much... until lately with indie games. But it's not that I consciously played LESS (though being a parent does that...), but I've also felt like they just aren't making the games I wanna play so much anymore.

@code ugly - dude, that's good to hear. It's something pushing you. I think right now, the threat of public embarrassment is pushing me as much as the competition! But I am excited to see Aegis Road completed and working.

@jay k (That Other Jay) - Thanks, man. I'm glad you liked the interviews. I wasn't sure anybody would.

Now I'm feeling all "Aw, garsh..."-y. Just... thanks for the support. It helps a TON.

Coyote:

'Not much of a gamer anymore' mainly refers to my time; I've just found other things to do with my time since I've become engaged.

Although, you do raise an interesting point; there aren't too many games that just suck me in anymore, either. It's been a while since I've finished a game, let alone heard a game premise that made me sit up and take notice.

Yeah, I SHOULD be a console gamer for all the games I try for a few hours and give up on. You can rent console games...

Though the last game I finished was Portal, just two nights ago, so I feel good about that. But it was a nice, relatively short game (not including all the bonus content). I'd like more games like Portal.
