XBox 360 Ate My Rock Band
I'm so very disappointed. Apparently, there's a risk if you have your XBox 360 positioned vertically (how we have the dev boxes set up at work), there's a chance that even a minor jostle will cause it to scratch a nasty little ring on your disc and ruin it.

Which is apparently what happened to Rock Band. And I got to play it so briefly...

I imagine EA will get around to fulfulling my warranty sometime within the next 6-8 months... Too bad I bought the thing from Amazon.com. Wal*Mart would have been simpler to do an exchange... except the ones here don't have any copies in stock (last time I checked).

Major bummer.

At least I got to beat Guitar Hero III (on Medium). The boss battles suck worse than I expected, but not as badly as I feared. But of course, that's on "medium" where I regularly 5-star everything just to unlock the songs. For a difficulty level that actually challenges me in the first place, I may be screaming obscenities at Neversoft.

Oh, and that "Through Fire and Flames" song... uh, yeah. That one's a challenge on medium. Holy cow!

Our work copy of Rock Band (isn't it great to work for a game company?) also got eaten by our 360. I really shouldn't have set it up vertically, since all those cables connected to the system were bound to knock it over.

We bought a disc doctor thingy and ran the disc through that a few times and now it works fine. (OK, it takes a couple of tries to get it to boot sometimes but then it's fine).

I'm picturing the ways a 360 could get knocked over while playing Rock Band.

Was it the scissored leg-hopping? Or a power knee slide?

I'm thinking it was actually the "cord's too short on the wired controller" maneuver...

But I don't recall.

Stay - hmmm.... maybe I'll have to come by and pay you a visit first before sending the disc out. Will you be in the office on New Year's Eve day?

ngthagg: Haha.. I wish. In this case, it was the "I'm going to just pull the guitar cord a little bit this direction so I can sit down on that comfy couch" maneuver.

coyote: Nope, I'm not in the office today (Jan 1). I'm at home. Did you want to try the disc doctor thing, then? You're welcome to drop by the office any time from Wednesday on...

We spent hours and hours last night playing Rock Band. I think I need to give up the company copy and buy my own. What a fantastic game. I played GHIII today for an hour, and it's pretty weak in comparison, in my opinion.

When that happens to me, I usually just run down to GameCrazy and have them rub the disk down. They have a little spinner that does it for a couple of bucks, and it's always worked for me.

It's the only option when you play used games.

I went ahead and sent it to EA for replacement, since it's still under warranty and everything. Hopefully I'll never experience any other problems with it, but if I do after the 90 days, I'll see about that option in the future.

We had friends bring over their copy of Rock Band last night for New Year's Eve... and that's seriously all we did the whole night. Except for setting off fireworks at midnight. It was way fun... that's like the ultimate party game.

Guitar Hero III - man. I like the game. It doesn't suck (except the boss battles...). But I hear what you are saying. You look at how Rock Band tried to reinvigorate the concept... and then you look at what Guitar Hero III did. Night and day.

RB does a much better job because it holds to the core concept behind the first game - to give the player the experience of being a rock 'n roll star. It did it by building on the metagame.

GH3, on the other hand, mostly plays it safe. And where it does go out on a limb, it screws it up. Theings like the boss battle, or the little animated cutscenes, remind you that you are just playing a game.
